Emberward has nine characters in the 1.0 build, and they are not skins — each one changes what a run can do. This page covers who they are, how they unlock, and which maze style each one fits.
The roster
| Character | Unlock | What they change |
|---|---|---|
| Feri the Novice | Starting character | The baseline. Learn the maze on Feri before judging any other character |
| Chunk the Builder | Chunk the Builder achievement | Structural play — blocks and maze shaping |
| Silas the Merchant | Silas the Merchant achievement | Economy. The Monopoly achievement is built around him |
| Tiny the Bot | Tiny the Bot achievement | Machine/tower support play |
| Belloc the Pyroguard | Belloc the Pyroguard achievement | Fire identity — the natural pick for a fire-committed run |
| Tana the Sorcerer | Tana the Sorcerer achievement | Buff and debuff mechanics; the community's endless-mode favourite |
| Chrono Traveler | Chrono Traveler achievement | Time manipulation |
| Estelle the Scholar | Progression | The Academy-side toolkit |
| Astra the Corruptweaver | Progression | Corruption mechanics |
The five achievement unlocks all come from ordinary play: the achievement names are exactly the unlock names, so the character list and the achievement list overlap heavily. If you are working through the achievements, you will pick up most of the roster without trying.
Special event characters are gated behind the end of the game
This is the 1.0 change that catches returning players out. Special Event Characters and Infernal Shards are only available after completing the entire game. When 1.0 added Void Depths as a new final region, anyone who had unlocked them during early access temporarily lost access — clear Void Depths on any difficulty and they come back.
So the sequence for a returning player is: finish Void Depths first, then rebuild the endgame setups that assumed you had an event character.
Who to play when
Learning the game: Feri the Novice
Feri exists so that a bad run is your fault and not the character's. Play the first region on Feri, and you will learn the two things that transfer to everyone else: corridor length beats tower count, and blocks are the real currency.
Learning to build: Chunk the Builder
Chunk is the answer to "my maze is always one tile short". If your runs fail because the route never quite folds the way you wanted, Chunk teaches the structural half of the game that damage characters let you ignore.
Economy runs: Silas the Merchant
Silas is the character for the Monopoly achievement and for anyone who wants to see what an unconstrained economy does to a run. He is also the clearest case of a character who changes when you buy things rather than what you buy.
Fire builds: Belloc the Pyroguard
If you have committed talent points to Fire, Belloc is the character who cashes them in. Pair him with the fire relic pool — Flamekeeper's Guard, Ember Guardian, Lava Bucket — and the altar pact mechanic if you are on Heroic.
Deep endless runs: Tana the Sorcerer
Tana is the character the community's endless-mode writing is built around — including the Dark Grip build that appears in the dedicated endless helper guides, and an enhancement-and-buffs write-up that goes as deep as Infernal Shard level 24. Her value is that buffs and debuffs scale with wave count in a way raw damage does not.
The specialist picks
- Tiny the Bot — machine and tower support. The S.C.R.A.B. achievement line is the most visible thing it touches.
- Chrono Traveler — time manipulation, which in practice means rerolls and cooldown compression.
- Estelle the Scholar — the Academy toolkit, referenced directly in the 1.0 Void Depths mechanics (Academy support items).
- Astra the Corruptweaver — corruption; the highest-ceiling, least forgiving pick.
Character versus talents
Talent points are permanent and global; the character is per-run. That asymmetry decides the order: take economy talents first regardless of who you main, because they pay off on every character, and only spend on character synergy once your roster and talent tree are both settled. If you plan to chase Emberwarder — all five regions on Heroic at Infernal Shard level 24 without an event character — note that it explicitly forbids event characters, so the run has to be built around the standard nine.
